There are specific measures of deciphering the rarity, and from it, the worth of all precious elements that form beautiful gems and jewels; measures that define both the quality and value of the product being presented. Through looking at these measures, a trained eye can accurately determine what the jewel is and how much it is worth along with the exceptional brilliance and individuality each one carries.
For diamonds, the measures of quality, value and worth lie within the four C’s: Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat weight.
Diamonds fall into multiple differing levels within each of these four categories, making each diamond completely unique and unlike any other.
HPHT diamonds come at a lower cost but present the same qualities of a regular diamond, they are sent to labs for certifications on cut, clarity and grading.
The first C; Color, has five different levels, each level becoming increasingly pigmented and becoming less rare and therefore less precious, declining its value. The names used to describe each of the levels of color on the diamond are ‘colorless, near colorless, faint yellow, very light yellow and light yellow’.
Each level then has further categorizations that create a more specific definition of the exact color of the diamond and its rarity. It starts off with the categories D, E, F under Colorless, G, H, I, J under Near Colorless, K, L, M under Faint Yellow, N, O, P, Q, R under Very Light Yellow and S-Z under Light Yellow.
The differences between the sublevels under the Colorless category are so minute that diamonds D, E and F are not easily distinguishable amongst each other even by professionals with specialized equipments, but the differences in both quality and color become increasingly apparent as we go further down the range of alphabets with the Z diamond being the yellowest, least rare and least expensive color found in diamonds.
While there exist multiple different definitions of what a ‘cut’ is in terms of a diamond, the types of cuts we normally see in diamonds show the kind and number of facets that are designed into the diamond. Each cut has its unique differences and causes light to reflect, refract and dance differently.
The main categorisation of different cuts falls under: Brilliant cuts , Step cuts and Mixed cuts.
Brilliant cuts are the product of the latest diamond cutting technology. It resembles twin pyramids, connected at the base and numerous facets cut in, maximizing sparkle with precision, offering timeless elegance. Each brilliantly cut diamond usually has about 57 or 58 facets. Step cuts, characterized by parallel lines, as the name itself suggests, evoke a 'hall of mirrors' effect, showcasing the epitome of grace. These facets are vastly different and uniquely cut in comparison with the brilliantly cut diamonds. Step cut diamonds have longitudinal cuts along each of the four sides, which are much larger than the facets seen in the previous kind of cut.
Mixed cuts are an innovative fusion of brilliant and step cuts, opening avenues for personalization and creativity. Mixed cuts come in a variety of options and each mixed cut diamond is an opportunity to showcase a one-of-a-kind gem, making each diamond a rare commodity, adding to the value of the diamond.
The Round Brilliant cut, with its extravagant facets, remains the most sought after, promising a radiant sparkle that defines luxury. Beyond shapes, understanding diamond cuts becomes a journey into the captivating essence of light, brilliance, and personal connection.
A diamond’s clarity is construed based on the gem’s inclusions’ and blemishes’ position and nature. The fewer inclusions and flaws found in the diamond, the more clarity it has; thus increasing its value and worth altogether. This is because diamonds without these flaws are rare and rarity is directly linked to a gem’s monetary value and worth.
A diamond’s clarity is usually defined by different grades of quality. According to the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) there are 11 grades to classify diamond clarity ranging from completely flawless diamonds to diamonds with obvious inclusions.
The Flawless (FL) grade denotes diamonds with no visible inclusions or blemishes when examined by a skilled grader under 10× magnification. These diamonds are exceptionally rare and prized for their impeccable clarity.
Internally Flawless (IF) diamonds exhibit no inclusions but may have blemishes which are only visible under 10× magnification to a skilled grader. While extremely high in quality, IF diamonds are more accessible than their Flawless counterparts.
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) diamonds present inclusions that are challenging to be detected even under 10× magnification. VVS diamonds, with their minimal imperfections, offer exceptional clarity and are highly sought after for their brilliance.
Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) diamonds showcase minor inclusions that vary in visibility, ranging from somewhat difficult to detect under 10× magnification. VS diamonds strike a balance between clarity and value.
Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) diamonds’ inclusions are noticeable to a skilled grader under 10× magnification. While SI diamonds may have visible imperfections, they often represent a good compromise between clarity and affordability.
Included (I1, I2, and I3) diamonds in this category have obvious inclusions under 10× magnification, potentially affecting transparency and brilliance. I-grade diamonds are generally more affordable but may exhibit visible imperfections.
Like all gems, jewels and valuables, one of the greatest measures of its worth lies in its size and weight. A diamond is no different; the bigger the stone, the more it is worth. The weight of a diamond is measured in Carats (ct), with each Carat measuring up to around 200 milligrams, allowing for a very precise measurement of the diamond’s size. Diamonds can weigh anywhere from 0.25ct to 5ct.
While picking the diamond that resonates with you the most, it is important to know the aspects to look into that may increase or decrease your gem’s value. That being said, each diamond is a unique masterpiece that unveils its character through the spectrum of color, the dance of facets in its cut, the flawless clarity that narrates its journey, and the weight that adds gravitas to its presence. In the universe of diamonds, where beauty meets rarity, each one becomes an enduring testament to nature's most extraordinary creations.
